Kal Ho Na Ho

Singer- Sonu Nigam
Movie- Kal Ho Na Ho
Year- 2003

An ever green classic. Sonu Nigam’s voice in this song is beyond magic, this is arguably his finest performance ever, his voice is calm, soothing and mature which perfectly matches with the lyrics and the music. This can be considered the most popular Hindi male vocal performance.

The Music by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy is unbeatable, the simple melodies and the voice of Sonu Nigam perfectly uplifts this sombre ballad.
Another reason for why this song is so legendary is because of the lyrics.
It is not just a song but a philosophy, that ‘tomorrow may never come’ live your life to the fullest.
This song has received many awards and rightfully so, Sonu Nigam was awarded Filmfare award for best male playback singer for this song. This song also later went on to become the highest selling song of the 2000s. Definitely our best pick from Top 10 Hindi male songs of all time.

Tere Naam

Singer- Udit Narayan
Movie- Tere Naam
Year- 2003

Remember in the early 2000s there was a fashion among young Indian boys to grow their hair and style it like Salman khan from this movie? Yes, the song ‘Teream’ had a major role to play in that.

If heartbreak had a voice, it was this song. The title track from the movie ‘Tere Naam’ perfectly captures the entire movie’s depth and feeling. As soon as the song starts, it hooks you. The instrumentation is minimal but powerful, which lets Udit Narayan’s voice carry much of the weight. And what a performance it is!

You can hear every bit of heartbreak, longing, and helplessness in his voice. His delivery is just perfect and it doesn’t just tell a story, it feels like he’s living it with you. That’s the magic of this song.

Lyrically, it resonates with a lot of young ones which tells a story of loving someone more than anything and having them not love you back. It is heartbreaking, longing and helplessness in a single song. Even after 20 years of this song the song still remains popular and still is one of the most heart wrenching male songs ever.

Mitwa

Singer- Shafqat Amanat Ali
Movie- Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
Year- 2006

There are some songs which are good and then there are songs which feel like having a conversation with your own soul. Mitwa belongs to the second category. This can be considered in the list of evergreen Hindi male playback songs.
Taken from the Movie ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ which is considered an emotionally deep and rich movie.

The track, Mitwa is not just a typical love ballad, it’s a much deeper song which explores topics like inner turmoil, emotional conflict, meaning of life and much more. And ofcourse, when Mr.Javed Akhtar writes lyrics for a song, it is guaranteed to shake your soul.

And the music from Shankar, Ehsan and Loy does justice to the words. The song connected to a wide audience because of its message and appeal and it continues to do so even after almost two decades of its release.

Pehla Nasha

Singer- Udit Narayan
Movie- Jo Jeeta wahi sikandar
Year- 1992

The ultimate anthem of first love. If you have ever been in love or day dreamed about it then chances are you know this song no matter when you were born.
Jatin- Lalit has done wonders in this song when it comes to the music, there’s no heavy instrumentation, no major tempo changes or complex chords but still the song flows like a river.

The song captures the feelings of falling in love for the first time, with lines like- ‘pehla nasha, pehla khumaar…. naya pyar hai, naya intezzaar’ Udit Narayan’s gentle and melodic voice carries this song to another dimension where it feels like Love is in the air.
Pehla Nasha has a timeless appeal to it and that is why it is in our Top 10 Hindi male songs. It is still played in weddings, romantic nights, college farewells and other special occasions where eternal love seems to be more than just a concept.

Chaiya Chaiya

Singer- Sukhwinder Singh
Movie- Dil se
Year- 1998

All the songs in this list are just total classics. It doesn’t feel right to put one over the other but here we are. Possibly the most recognized song from the late 90s and early 2000s era. Music by legendary A.R Rahman is absolutely incredible here, the rhythm, the funky beats and the sufi music makes it more than just a song, it feels like a dance number but with a spiritual quest.
When this first came out, India had not heard music like this before, it stood ahead and led the way. The vocals by Sukhwinder Singh are powerful and impactful which carry the weight of words by Gulzar perfectly.

And let’s talk about the train scene. How brilliant was that?
No CGI, No Stuntmen, just a real moving train and our actors and dancers dancing on top of that.
The song had such a global impact that it is still being sampled and remixed. It’s a piece of Indian pop culture and was also featured in Time Magazine’s list of top 10 movie songs of all time.
How cool is that!

Tujhe Dekha To

Singer- Kumar Sanu
Movie- Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
Year- 1995

A mustard field, a red scarf fluttering, a boy meeting a girl. The scene and the song which changed Indian cinema forever. Jatin-Lalit has composed and arranged the music like never before.

Just as you hear the violins kick in, it immediately takes you to the yellow and green mustard field. That is the power of music in this song. The use of string instruments and the rhythm is quite brilliant. The voice of Kumar Sanu and Lata Mangeshkar carries the song perfectly and helps it achieve the effectiveness and the emotional heights which Anand Bakshi has written about.

This song became the blueprint for romantic songs in Bollywood. Not only that, it is played in almost every wedding party, college festivals and more.

The cultural impact of this song can not be understated. Even if you have not seen DDLJ (which is rare) you still have felt this song somewhere. A truly legendary song from Bollywood and certainly one of the top 10 Hindi male songs of all time.

Ae Mere Humsafar

Singer- Udit Narayan
Movie- Qayamat se Qayamat tak
Year- 1993

Pure Bollywood Romance. The above sentence seems to sum this song up perfectly.
This song was released when bollywood was transitioning from the 80s disco era to more romantic, emotional love stories.

Yet another masterpiece sung by the legendary Udit Narayan, his voice in this song is young, full of hope and love. The optimism in this song becomes more heartbreaking when you see the ending of this film. This was the reason it was a hit when the movie first came out and still today, this song stands for yearning, love and hopefulness.

The song seems to capture the bittersweet feeling perfectly before this love story takes a turn. Amir Khan and Juhi Chawla were brilliant in this movie and this song was also a major reason behind their upcoming success in the industry.

Tere Mast Mast do Nain

Singer- Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Movie- Dabangg
Year- 2010

If you ask me personally, this should be the number one on this list but since it came out in 2010 it lacks the praise it might have gotten if released in the 90s or earlier. Right from the first second of the song, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice grabs you. Sure the chorus line is maybe not that impactful word wise but the verse of the song is extra ordinarily beautiful.

Rahet Fateh Ali Khan is definitely an underrated gem when it comes to top Hindi male singers. The song was a major hit along with the film, it starred Salman khan and it was the first major role of the actress Sonakshi Sinha.

The female verse is sung by Shreya Ghoshal and it couldn’t have been more beautiful. This duo was perfect for this song. Which leads us to the next song which deserves even more praise.

Did You Know?

The film Dabangg broke multiple box office records. It became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2010, earning over ₹200 crore worldwide.

Afreen Afreen

Singer- Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Album- Coke Studio Pakistan
Year- 2016

If this song is not magic then what is?
Everything about this song is phenomenal.
The word beautiful doesn’t do justice to this song.

Let’s start with the original composers. This qawwali was composed and sung by the legendary Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the lyrics are inspired by the poetry from Faaiz Anwar. The song is not just a love song it takes the meaning of awe and love and defines the lover as some spiritual creation. And takes comparisons from Ajanta’s sculptures, scented moonlight and comparison which will definitely make you wonder how beautiful that person must be.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a successor and musical heir of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and if anyone deserves to pay a tribute to this legendary Qawwali, it’s him. The coke studio version is just too good, from the production, to the mixing of the track to the performances by the musicians and don’t forget the beautiful vocals by Momina Musthesan. This song has close to 600 million views on YouTube and this should tell you how legendary this track is.

Bin Tere

Singer- Shafqat Amanat Ali
Movie- I hate Luv stories
Year- 2010

Okay, we have saved the most underrated song for the last. The last song from our list- Top 10 Hindi male songs. And here it is. There aren’t many songs from this era which hold the recall value like this one does. Although being a love song, the music and the rhythm of this one is quite different from any of the above mentioned songs.
The music is composed by legendary modern day duo-Vishal-Shekhar.

The voice of Shafqat Amanat Ali is sincere, pleasing and conveys the story of separation and longing for your love quite beautifully. His classical roots can be heard on this otherwise very modern sounding track. The lyrics are deep and emotional.

Imagine a young boy driving in the evening city lights, thinking about his lover who is not by his side for whatever reason. It’s that feeling of missing someone which can be explained by the line- ‘Bin tere, Koi khalish hai Hawaon me bin tere’.
And- ‘Ek ghani tanhaayi chaa rahi hai, Manzilein raaston mein hi gum hone lagi, Ho gayi ansuni har dua ab meri, Reh gayi ankahi, Bin tere’.
