The F minor ukulele chord is relatively tricky chord at a beginner level, but a key chord if you want to get your skill levels up in Ukulele and want to play a wide variety of songs. Our advise is to make sure you practice few of the chords like C, G, D etc. in Ukulele before you start practicing F minor chord.
Ukulele Set-up
Make sure the ukulele is in standard tuning:
- G – 4th string
- C – 3rd string
- E – 2nd string
- A – 1st string

Playing the F minor chord on Ukulele
The F minor chord consists of following 3 notes:
- F (Root note)
- Ab (Minor flat 3rd note)
- C (5th note)
Take a look at the chord diagram of the F minor chord, which is also referred to as Fm chord. As you can see the chord will use 3 fingers.
Let us play the F minor 3 simple steps:
Step 1 : Place the 1st finger in 1st fret of G string (Ab note)
Step 2 : Place the 2nd finger in 1st fret of E string (F note or root note)
Step 3 : Now the difficult bit. Place the 3rd finger in 3rd fret of the A string (C note)
Now strum all the 4 strings together and that is the F minor of Fm chord for you. Note the ‘o’ in the 3rd string and that means play as open ukulele string. (C note)
Tips of playing the perfect Fm chord in Ukulele
- Make sure your Ukulele is properly tuned in standard tuning by using ukulele tuner. Else the sound will not be Fm.
- Take care that your fingers are not touching the rest of the strings. You will have initially challenge in this particularly when you are trying to use your third finger. It is common for all beginners to go through this. But eventually with a little bit of practise you will get through this issue.
