A Prelude to The Magic Flute

To answer the million dollar question of why this one stands out, Mozart’s experiment of blending musical genres. Alright, that could be just one reason. The Magic Flute opera also includes a singspiel (a kind of German opera with dialogues). The plot revolves around fairy tale elements and Mozart’s genius styles of composing. Back to the Opera, lets us look at the historical aspects it was created with.

The Tale of ‘The Magic Flute’, Mozart

However was it known to everyone back then, without technological advancement like we have today? The Magic Flute opera or Die Zauberflote premiered in 1791, Vienna. It caught everyone’s eye just two months prior to Mozart’s demise. Some say, the Magic Flute characters, nay the opera itself has a quest for wisdom, a victory over darkness and handle on virtue. Though it takes place in a fantasy world with magical, dreamy elements, it steers in the path of ideals and reasoning. Its enchanting story telling spectacle, the memorable melodies and the appealing themes, all put together contributed to its popularity. The Magic Flute arias are quite distinct and interesting.

The Magic Flute Characters

Here is the rundown of the magic flute characters with their roles explained.

Tamino: the male protagonist who sets on a quest to free the princess held in captivity. 

Pamino: The female protagonist and the daughter of Queen of the night. 

Queen of the Night: Pamino’s plotting and vengeful mother.

Papageno: A comical bird catcher who is also the companion of Tamino.

Papagena: Papgeno’s love.

Sarastro: The main antagonist of the queen of the night who is a high priest.

Three boys: Mysterious ‘the magic flute characters’ who guide the prince. 

Three ladies: Ladies in waiting for the Queen.

Monostatos: Sarastro’s Servant. 

The Magic Flute Summary

Now picture a moonlit opera house and you’re about to witness the magical performance! Hold on to your hat while we begin the The Magic Flute plot. The libretto(text of an opera) was written by Emanuel Schikanadar. He was a friend of Mozart and also played a part in this opera. The Magic Flute Summary as follows,

Magic Flute Scene 1

The magical tale begins with a serpent chasing Prince Tamino as he sings “Zu Hilfe! Zu Hilfe!” He then faints from exhaustion. There come three ladies who rescue the Prince. No mention of the serpent by this point! Wink! As soon as the Prince wakes up, he learns about his rescuers. Turns out they work for the Queen of the Night and he gets the magic flute. The flute has the power to protect him from any danger.

“Oh, Wie Will Ich Triumphieren”, recitative and aria when Prince Tamino proceeds to learn about Pamina. She is the daughter of the Queen of the Night, wait for it, and is held in captivity by the evil Sarastro! 

Papageno (a bird catcher) is introduced in a beautiful aria, “Der Vogelfänger Bin Ich Ja.” He also tells Tamino that he killed the serpent. Him and three other boys accompany Tamino on his mission to rescue the damsel in distress. The ladies who worked for the Queen gave him magic bells. 

Recitative: O Zittre Nicht, Mein Lieber Sohn, Aria: Du Du Du wirst Befreien Gehen. Upon learning that Tamnino has fallen in love with Panima, the Queen of the night conveys that the couple can be happily ever after, when he brings her home/

Magic Flute Scene 2

Trio: “Du feines Täubchen, nur herein!”, Tamino chained by Monostatos! While Papageno announces the news about the mission to rescue the princess by the Young prince, Duet: Bei Mannern Welche Liebe Fuhlen. Pamina and Tamino fall in love. 

Magic Flute Scene 3

The three boys helps Tamino reach Sarastro’s temple, Quartet: “Zum Ziele führt dich diese Bahn” 

Here’s a juicy twist: Papageno and Tamino learn Shastro isn’t a monster but a wise man. Tamino confused – Aria: Wie stark ist nicht dein Zauberton, hurries to find Papageno. 

Pamina und Papageno enters “Schnelle Füße rascher Mut”, where they are once again chained. Sarastro claims that he only wishes happiness for Pamino and so he will release him to her mother, a proud woman.  Act 1 closes with Chorus: “Es lebe sarastro”.

Act 2

Second act opens with March of the priests and aria: “O Isis und Osiris”. This is Sarastro invoking the Gods to protect Tamio and Pamina. 

Scene 2

The young prince and princess go through a series of trials to test their commitment. Duett:  “Bewahret euch vor Weibertücken”. The three ladies come down to remind them of what the Queen had told them about Sarastro. Quintett: Wie, Wie, Wie. 

Scene 3

Monostatos gazes at the beauty of Pamina. Aria: “Alles fühlt der Liebe, Freuden”. 

Enter the Queen of the Night not happy with the turn of events. Pamino is now plotting against Sarastro to kill him or to face the wrath of her mother. 

Aria: “Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen”

Scene 4

Bound by silence Tamino and Papageno receive the magic flute and the bells from the boys. Trio: “Seid uns zum zweiten Mal willkommen”. Pamina is now in the midst of her lover. The prince’s silence breaks Pamino’s heart and leaves in despair. Aria: “Ach ich fuhl’s”. One of my favorites in The Magic Flute Mozart.

Scene 5 

Hands down, the hero triumphs. At this point, Sarashtro asks both the prince and princess farewell for their own good. With the heartfelt Trio: “Soll ich dich, Teurer, nicht mehr sehn” papageno on his separate quest for finding partner, sings Aria: “Ein Madchen oder Weibchen”

Scene 6

Enter the three boys empathizes with pamino’s suicidal thoughts for she belives Tamino no longer loves her. Quartett: “Bald prangt, den Morgen zu verkünden”. Moving on to the prince’s more trials. 

Scene 7

Tamino is to overcome the fear of death preps for the trial. Aria: “Der, welcher wandert diese Straße voll Beschwerden”. Coming out with flying colors, none other than Tamino breaking his silence. He then confesses his love for Pamino: “Tamino mein, o welch ein Gluck”

Scene 8

Aria- quartet: “Papageno! Papagena! “Weibchen, Taubschen meine Schone”. Papageno in the disparity of losing his partner Papagena. But she comes back and unites with him. Duet: “Pa…Pa…Pa…”

Scene 9

Monostatos along with the Queen of the Night and her ladies decide to destroy the temple creating quite the rumpus. Aria: “Nur stille. Stille”.  Amidst this plot, Pamino is now promised to Monostatos but interrupted by Sarastro. 

Scene 10

Light vanquishes darkness! Chorus of the The Magic Flute opera hails the Prince and the princess’s union.
