Perfect Single Piece Body
Carved out of single piece of jackfruit tree wood, selected personally by Mr.Elumalai from Panruti, Tamil Nadu. The body is carved in garage and left to season so that the wood becomes dry and becomes durable.
Craftsmanship - The Magic of Mr. Elumalai
The cow, ox, goat leather are selected from many pieces. Thicker the skin, the note becomes too bass, thinner leather means the note becomes high. Preparation of Mootu and building the right tension so that left and right head is attached to the body either by Vaar (Strap) or Nut & Bolt mechanism.

- No sharp objects to be used in both heads – left & right, for cleaning or removing rava or sadam, as it can damage the surface.
- Water (including sweat) to be avoided on the right side or valanthalai of the mridangam. If your hands are sweaty use talcum powder.
- You can use water/ moisture to tune up or down on the left side or thoppi.
- You can leave rava or the white paste that is used in thoppi/ left side to be removed after playing. If left for more than few days, the white paste can become dark and damage the thoppi.
3 tools are used for tuning – Pullu (wooden peg), kallu (special stone) and Appu (acrylic piece).
Kallu (Stone): Kallu is spherical smooth special stone that can be used to hit the appu & top of mootu to the tune the right side or Elan thalai. These stones can be obtained only from specific locations in India.
Pullu: The pullu or wooden peg sometimes a hard synthic piece is a special shaped piece used is hit on right side below the mootu to tune the right side to rise the pitch.
Aapu: A special wooden piece used for tuning the left side of the mridangam to fine tune the bass notes.
Special Paste on Right Side:
A paste made up of rawa (semolina) and water is applied on centre of the right side or Edan thalai. You can use water to reduce the pitch. Alternatively readymade Clay is also available that can also be used instead of rawa & water paste.
