About Carnatic Flutes, Flute of South India
Carnatic Flutes is also referred as Karnatic flute or Venu or Pulankuzhal is the flute that is used in South India (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telengana, Andra Pradesh & Kerala). The flute was made popular among the carnatic circle by TR Mahalingam better known as TR Mali.
Anatomy of a Carnatic Flute
The carnatic flute has one blowing hole and eight blowing holes. The node is natural and the wood is made from special bamboo flute from parts of Kerala and Karnataka.
The Shadjam (tonic Sa) or the scale is the note played when the first two finger holes are covered. Three fingers (index, middle & ring fingers) cover the first 3 holes, while four fingers (index, middle, ring & pinky finger) are used to cover the next 4 holes. The last or the 8th hole is generally left open, sometimes used for tuning.
Classification of Carnatic Flutes
We can broady classify Carnatic flutes into 3 segments based on size (length of the flute) and octave that is being played.
- Medium Sized Flutes: 12 flutes, one for each scale : C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A# & B. These flutes are used to play the mid octave
- Bass Flutes: The flutes are larger in size to get that deep bass sound. G, G#, A & A# scales are recommended. These flutes are used to play lower octave.
- Small Sized Flutes : Beyond a key the flutes become too small to handle. G, G# & A scales are recommended. These flutes are used to play higher octave.

The Flutes are shipped typically within 24 hours (Except Sundays) from time of order is placed. All orders placed on Sundays are shipped on Mondays. India Post is our preferred shipping partner for all international locations.
Delivery within India
All orders in India for metro locations will reach you in 1-4 business working days, while non metro locations is around 4-7 business working days. All deliveries within India are shipped freely. We will share the tracking number on the same day we despatch the flutes.
Delivery to International Locations
Delivery times are between 7-28 days from date of delivery. Each country has its own policy for wood items. Please note that we will try our level best to get custom cleared, but we may also need your help on same. Very rarely there may some fees levied. The customer has to bear those expenses.
