THE BEST CARNATIC FLUTES FOR CLASSICAL MUSIC

Indiran handmade flutes are crafted one at a time by Indiran, who has mastered the art of crafting awesome carnatic and hindustani flutes over the last 30+ years. The flutes are made with first quality select bamboo through a natural and labour intensive process of removing moisture, drying and drilling holes. He has taken it as a mission to craft India’s best handmade carnatic and hindustani flutes. In a nutshell, this is what it means for you:

1. Selection & seasoning of Bamboo

The wood is selected from the finest quality bamboo. Backed by 30+ years of selecting wood and making the finest quality ‘bamboo’ flutes. These bamboo has to be of a certain thickness to get that beautiful carnatic tone.

Perfect Tuning

2. Perfect tuning

While you can play one octave notes, you can also play higher notes in the next octave easily. Making such flutes is an art and Indiran has mastered this art over a long period of time.

Playing higher notes

Playing higher notes

The notes have to be perfectly tuned to play carnatic music. Each bamboo piece is unique, therefore drilling the finger and blowing holes has to be mastered on different sizes – length, diameter and thickness of the bamboo.

WONDER, HOW INDRIAN MAKES INDIA’S BEST CARNATIC FLUTES?

1. Selection of Bamboo
The first step is selection of the finest quality bamboo. The ideal raw bamboo for flutes are available only in ‘select’ forests in Kerala & Karnataka. Mr.Indiran travels to these places once in a month to select the bamboo. The bamboo pieces have to be of a certain age, length, diameter, thickness etc. and have to be cut in particular parts of the bamboo tree to preserve the natural nodes (referred to as ‘Kanu’ meaning the one end is naturally closed) an essential feature of classical bamboo carnatic flute. These raw bamboo is moved from forests to Indiran’s garage by trucks and the whole process takes about a week.

2. Seasoning of Bamboo
When the raw bamboo reaches Indiran’s garage, the bamboo is green and raw. Since the wood is fresh there will be a fair amount of natural moisture. The bamboo is dried approximately for 10-15 days at room temperature without sunlight. All these are manually wiped and cleaned for the wood to get a smooth finish. The average temperature of Kanyakumari is 26*C making it an ideal place to manufacture flutes.
During the process of seasoning, the wood loses a fair amount of moisture naturally and close to 50% of flutes will get bent naturally. The natural bamboo secretes certain kinds of liquid, technically known as ‘slime flux’ or sometimes known as ‘wet wood’.The ‘bent’ flutes are unfit for further process. The balance bamboos depending upon the size and length are then segregated and marked what are the scales that can be made from them.
Highlight this interesting fact if possible like how we do for the blog
Interesting fact: The bamboo in this stage will turn from green to white colour. The whole process takes 2-3 weeks just to get the wood ready to start the process of manufacturing the flute.

3. Handcrafting carnatic flute – One at a time
Once the initial process of seasoning is done, in the next step special oils are applied on the wood and the wood is heat treated to remove the balanced moisture. The wood becomes hard so that it can last for a long time. During the heat treatment process the wood turns into a beautiful dark natural colour. This is done piece by piece. Unlike the majority of the carnatic flutes, which are mass produced and machine cut, Indiran’s handcrafts are made one flute at a time.

4. Tuning a carnatic flute – The magic of Mr.Indiran
The thickness of all bamboo is not the same. So depending upon the diameter, gauge and the size and position of the node, each flute is marked for position to drill the blowing and finger holes. The fingering holes position and size are decided with respect to those of blowing holes. So even in the same scale for two different flutes, the size of the blowing hole and fingering hole may not be the same. The diameter of the finger holes are adjusted one by one to get the root note and respective notes of the key.
So each flute is personally handcrafted by Indiran ensuring it meets the rigorous demand of carnatic flautists in terms of perfect tuning, playability and craftsmanship.
When you are buying a carnatic flute by Indiran you are becoming a part of tradition and community of great carnatic flautists.

5. Customising the carnatic flutes
A carnatic flute can be customised to a specific need. Some of the carnatic flautists may have smaller or thinner fingers. So if they play with the same standard size, it will be difficult to cover the full hole and notes will not be correct while playing the venu. For such players, we can customise the finger holes with reduced diameter or hole size. Crafting such customised flutes needs experience, patience and more importantly it needs lot of attention and time.

VENU FLUTE, THE BEAUTIFUL WIND INSTRUMENT

Carnatic Flutes is also referred as Karnatic flute, Venu or Pulankuzhal is the flute that is used in South India (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh & Kerala). Venu flute is a monophonic instrument meaning it can sound like that of a human voice. A carnatic flute is capable of producing notes in two and half octaves with cross fingering and over blowing.

History of Venu

While the history of venu flute can be traced hundreds of years back, it was only about 125+ years back, Sri Sarabha Sastri designed the carnatic flute. However it was Palladam Sanjeeva Rao who made it a popular instrument among the carnatic circle. He promoted the flute also as main concert instrument along with Mirudangam, Violin, Veena etc. Prior to that flute was generally considered as a folk instrument. The flute was made popular among the carnatic circle by TR Mahalingam better known as TR Mali.

Anatomy of a carnatic flute

The carnatic flute has one blowing hole and eight finger holes. The end near the blowing hole has a natural node and this is an essential feature of carnatic flute. The other end is open. The last finger hole is not widely used and occasionally used for tuning.

The Shadjam (tonic Sa) or the scale is the note played when the first two finger holes are covered. Three fingers (index, middle & ring fingers) in the left hand cover the first 3 holes. In the right hand, four fingers (index, middle, ring & pinky finger) are used to cover the next 4 holes. The last or the 8th hole is generally left open, sometimes used for tuning.

Classification of carnatic flutes

We can broadly classify carnatic flutes into 3 segments based on size (length of the flute) and octave that is being played.

  • Medium sized flutes: 12 flutes, one for each scale : C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A# & B. These flutes are used to play the mid octave.
  • Bass flutes: The flutes are larger in size to get that deep bass sound. G, G#, A, A# and B scales are recommended. These flutes are used to play lower octaves. Beyond G base scale the flute’s length becomes too long and the distance between finger holes becomes too large to play the flute.
  • Small sized flutes: Beyond a key the flutes become too small to handle. So these flutes are not recommended for playing.
